Madusa trashes the WWF Women’s Championship
[December 18th, 1995]
It’s one of the most famous moments in professional wrestling history, and I don’t think I’ve ever featured it on my blog. In the early 1990s, Madusa jumped ship from WCW to join the WWF, where she wrestled as Alundra Blayze. It was there that she was made the frontrunner of the women’s division, winning the WWF Women’s Championship in December of 1993 and going on to become a 3-time champion before rejoining WCW in December of 1995. The title was declared defunct when Blayze left the company, and was buried by this bold moment from WCW history. Blayze arrived during a segment featuring the commentators and showed the WWF Women’s Championship belt off before dropping it in the trash can.
This had never been done before on WWF or WCW programming, and was considered a huge shot fired by WCW to have one of the top championships from the opposing company tossed in the garbage on live television. The WWF wouldn’t have a Women’s Championship for nearly three more years, and wouldn’t rehire WCW when the company was acquired by the WWF in 2001. However, in 2015, all fences were mended and Madusa was inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame, where she rescued the title from the trash and declared herself the reigning Women’s Champion.
